Protect Your Pets: Heartworm is on the Rise in Oregon
A recent article from KATU reported that heartworm cases are on the rise across the state.
According to the Companion Animal Parasite Council, 193 dogs tested positive for heartworm in Oregon in 2016. That number is quite a bit higher than in 2012, when there were only 128 cases. Heartworm cases in Oregon used to stay mostly in the southern area of the state, but they’re becoming increasingly prevalent in the Portland-metro area.
Veterinarians attribute the rise in cases to the rise of mosquitoes in the area. To protect your pets, keep them all on heartworm preventative medications. Talk to your Newberg Veterinary Hospital veterinarian about which is right for your pet.
