Angela Hughes Gorka, DVM PhD MS

Veterinarian

Dr. Angela Hughes joined the Newberg Vet team in 2026 to offer reproduction, genetics, and general medicine services. Dr. Hughes completed her veterinary degree, veterinary genetics residency, PhD in genetics (studying Addison’s disease in the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever), and held an associate clinical professor position at the University of California, Davis before joining Mars where she has held multiple positions across their genetics and pet nutrition business units. Dr. Hughes is a recognized expert in veterinary genetics and a Welsh Springer Spaniel breeder who pioneered the concept of genetically aligning potential breeding dogs to evaluate genetic diversity and launched this in a first-of-its-kind test called Optimal Selection™. Dr. Hughes also recently completed a Master’s degree in Communications through the University of Florida and is now working on a veterinary genetics textbook.

Outside of the office, Angela enjoys traveling with her family, reading/listening to copious amounts of fiction and non-fiction, and showing Welsh Springers in conformation. Her family includes a Devon Rex cat, a Russell Terrier/Australian Cattle Dog mix, a Welsh Springer Spaniel, and a tank of various tetras.
